Lakshadweep tourism   by Mathan Mohan

Lakshadweep is a group of islands in the Laccadive Sea near the West Coast of the state of Kerala. This archipelago comprises of 36 main islands apart from several smaller islands, coral atolls and coral reefs. Considered one of the world’s most exotic tropical island systems, only ten of the Lakshadweep islands are inhabited.

Lakshadweep tourism has various avenues to offer tourists who come here in search of an exotic and pristine beach location. The most developed island in terms of tourism is the Kavaratti island. The island is home to around 52 beautiful mosques which include the most exquisite one, the Ujra Mosque. Its ornately carved ceiling is believed to have been carved from a piece of driftwood. The lagoon at Kavaratti has soft sandy beaches and sparkling waters, making it ideal for water sports and swimming. The Marine Aquarium is also very popular for its marine life exhibits. Another popular activity here is to see the underwater marine life through glass bottomed boats that are available for hire.

Another prominent island in the region is the Kalpeni island, which has the largest lagoon among Lakshadweep islands. Lakshadweep tourism focuses mostly on the promotion of water sports in this lagoon as it is relatively shallow and so ideal for these activities. The island of Kadmat is an exquisite island secluded in its geographical location with a long shoreline and a lagoon of equal depth making it one of the most sought after dive sites in that region. The Agatti island is a gateway into the exotic archipelagos of the Lakshadweep islands being home to the sole airport in all the islands. Uninhabited islands of Bangaram, Thinnakara, Parali-I and Parali-II are just a hop away from here.

Another island that contributes heavily to Lakshadweep tourism is Bangaram, with its deep, crystal clear and warm waters combined with the presence of a rich and diverse flora and fauna making it an irresistible haven for scuba divers from all across the world. With the presence of a various coral fishes like the angel, the clown, the butterfly, the surgeon, harmless sharks, manta rays, sting rays moray eels and turtles.

The Lakshadweep tourism has attempted to promote all the islands with different and distinct attractions. While all islands are blessed with exotic coral reef formations, soft sandy beaches and unblemished waters, some have been promoted for their exotic diving spots, others are famous for their water sports activities. Still others have been developed in such a way so as to showcase it as a chilled out beach destination with the waters being given prominence over land since land is so scarce.
