Importance of Garbage Trucks   by Omprakash Singh

Garbage trucks form an essential part in the modern day world. Cleanliness is something that needs to be taken seriously and it is being done by everyone. There are more garbage and trash trucks Than Ever on the roads. These are collect dust and garbage from all over the city and transport the same outside the city. These trucks form an essential part of the fleet of trucks required for the maintenance and for waste management programs. With population, the amount of garbage being generated has been on a constant rise and so has been the need for such trucks. Life can’t be imagined clean and hygienic without these trucks.

There are 5 basic types of garbage trucks – front loaders, grapple, side loaders, pneumatic collector loaders and rear loaders. Depending on requirements, these are used at various locations. The trucks, initially, were open tops which emitted stink all around the place and they were quite inconvenient for citizens and unhygienic too. Citing this problem, they were then covered from the top. In the beginning, these trucks were used in parts of Europe and North America and later started being used in other parts of the world.

Front loaders are used in commercial and industrial areas that lift up dumpsters. Automated forks in the truck lift the dumpsters and once on top of the truck, they’re flipped upside down and the dumpsters are finally emptied in the truck. Rear loaders are used to empty large garbage carts and as the name suggests, the garbage is emptied to the truck from the rear. Side loader garbage trucks are generally used in residential areas, wherein small bins are lifted by hand or automatically and emptied to the truck. Pneumatic collectors have cranes attached to them to lift bins from the streets. They are one of the most high capacity garbage trucks.

For loading waste material and garbage inside these trucks, bins filled with garbage had to be lifted and emptied in the truck. This was very inconvenient and laborious. Cables were later used to lift these garbage bins from the ground. With the advent of technology, there are many innovations being used in garbage trucks. Compactors were later attached to garbage trucks and with the help of hydraulic press the capacity of these trucks got doubled. During the mid-1950s, front loading dumpsters were introduced in the market. In the 1970s, grapple trucks were introduced and in the later part of 1990s refuse trucks were first seen. With constant innovations in the garbage truck technology, disposal time and capacity of garbage trucks has been impressive.
