Ford Fiesta ST has Focus ST DNA by Matthew C. Keegan
Fiesta hotness unveiled in Germany.
The 2011 Frankfurt International Motor Show has featured a number of ground-breaking vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Jaguar and other European makes, but the Ford Motor Company may have introduced to the world a fan favorite. The Ford Fiesta ST, based on the company’s subcompact car architecture was introduced, a vehicle that is likely to hit the European market in 2012. We won’t see this vehicle in the United States right away, but chances are that by 2013 this Focus-inspired Fiesta ST model will make its debut stateside.
Ecoboosted Engines
The Ford Fiesta ST is part of Ford’s global performance strategy whereby the automaker is building a variety of cars, trucks and crossovers that are big on power, but still fuel efficient. In the United States, the Ford Mustang is the leader in all things performance, but it has been supplemented by powerful full-size trucks and a bevy of crossovers and sedans equipped with EcoBoost kick.
Offering comment on behalf of Ford was Derrick Kuzak, group vice president Global Product Development who stated, “We’re leveraging our global product platforms to create great new performance vehicles like the Focus ST. By taking advantage of platform efficiencies and focusing our performance engineering resources globally, we can bring performance vehicles to more customers in more markets, plus we’re better positioned for Ford products to compete successfully in global motorsport.”
Motorsport DNA
The Fiesta ST follows on the heels of the Focus ST, a compact model that was developed by the Ford Performance Vehicles group. This group comprises Europe’s Ford Team RS and North America’s Special Vehicle Team, which have been working to establish the foundation for all of Ford’s future global performance vehicles. That “DNA” will be seen in a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine, rated at 177 horsepower and 177 foot-pounds of torque. Zero to 60 times of under 7 seconds is the goal with a targeted top speed of 136 mph. That engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Ford Fiesta ST will be the second Fiesta model to get an EcoBoost engine. A 1.0-liter three cylinder EcoBoost is on its way in early 2012, slated to power the European Fiesta. The American Fiesta will continue to offer a 1.6-liter engine, but the small EcoBoost is likely to appear by 2013, perhaps timed with the Fiesta ST’s introduction.
Next Gen Mustang
Ford faithful are also hoping that the automaker will offer teaser pictures of its next generation Mustang which is due out in 2014 as a 2015 model. That vehicle may borrow EVOS concept styling cues or it could set the tone for a whole new series of sport coupes for the following 10 years.
